[5th in Series] Scene Report from the “Justice Affairs Diplomacy” Ministerial Forum, including the G7 Justice Ministers’ Meeting: JCS × G7 × Sustainable Conventions®

JCS was responsible for running the 2-day “Justice Affairs Diplomacy” Ministerial Forum, including the G7 Justice Ministers’ Meeting at the Hotel New Otani Tokyo in Chiyoda City on Thursday, July 6 and Friday, July 7. At the “Justice Affairs Diplomacy” Ministerial Forum, three ministerial-level meetings were held: the ASEAN–Japan Special Meeting of Justice Ministers, the G7 Justice Ministers’ Meeting, and the ASEAN–G7 Justice Ministers’ Interface. Dialog occurred to promote international cooperation and interaction between the G7 and ASEAN nations in the field of law and justice.

JCS proposed sustainability initiatives from the planning stage of the Ministerial Forum, just as it did for the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Karuizawa, Nagano (Sunday, April 16–Tuesday, April 18); the G7 Digital and Tech Ministers’ Meeting in Takasaki, Gunma (Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30); the G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting in Nagasaki (Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14); and the Press Conference by Prime Minister as Chair of the G7 Hiroshima Summit Meeting, presidential press conferences by the leaders of participating countries, and the International Media Center (Friday, May 19–Sunday, May 21). Our BSI’s Associate Consultant* performed on-site assessments of sustainability initiatives at the meeting based on JCS' own Sustainable Conventions® guidelines. We present the latest from the field and our efforts on sustainability at the meeting.

*The certification body BSI Group Japan K.K. selected JCS as a member of BSI’s Associate Consultant Programme based on certain conditions. We were selected for our wealth of experience and expertise in event sustainability.

Showcasing Japanese culture through omotenashi (hospitality) events

The venue was decorated with Star Festival bamboo branches, and live koto zither and shakuhachi flute music accompanied the entrance and exit of the participants. A kabuki performance entertained guests at dinner on the final day of the forum. These were some of the many ways in which Japanese culture was showcased to the world.

Next-generation in action: ASEAN–Japan Special Youth Forum

Over 60 students from undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Japan and ASEAN member states gathered for dialog on the “Rule of Law in the Digital Era.” The forum was an invaluable setting for next-generation Japanese and ASEAN youths to deepen mutual understanding.

Special Events and Exhibitions open to the public

Special Events for the “Justice Affairs Diplomacy” Ministerial Forum included panel discussions and presentations organized by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ), ASEAN member states, and international organizations on topics related to the rule of law and respect for human rights as the themes of this forum. Exhibitions on these themes were set up in the foyer in front of the venue. These events, which were open to the public, offered opportunities to many people to learn about initiatives by the MOJ and ASEAN member states.

In August 2012, JCS became the first company in Japan to be ISO 20121 certified (Event Sustainability Certification). As a leader in the convention industry, JCS is committed to offering Sustainable Conventions®*, which consider environmental, social, and economic sustainability to add value to events and help create a sustainable society.
